The Time is now: Mass Lobby in London
Paddy and Sarah Gleave, Sarah’s parents and Penny Faux attended ‘The Time is Now’ mass lobby of MPs in London.
They met Wera Hobhouse and encouraged her to fight for net zero carbon by 2045.
12,000 plus people joined a mass lobby of MPs in Westminster to call for urgent action to tackle the climate emergency, timed to coincide with the debate on Theresa May’s target of net zero green house gas emissions by 2050. At 2pm we all set off alarm clocks to signal ‘The Time is Now’. Many of us followed the Rt Reverend Rowan Williams on a Walk of Witness from Trafalgar Square to Church House to hear inter faith speakers. Williams compared this moment to the struggle to end the entrenched global culture supporting the slave trade. Many MPs agreed to meet us, and Wera Hobhouse was ‘on our side’ and working on a policy, though relatively powerless as a Lib Dem. She underlined, even so, that Government can only do so much, that it will be challenging and that local grass roots initiatives are highly necessary too. She encouraged follow up emails, so get emailing to ask what your MP is doing. Penny's favourite banner? ‘Don’t be a fossil fool’.
