Weston All Saints v Southstoke Match Report
On a sunny but chilly late May evening at the beautiful Bathampton cricket ground and within touching distance of the George pub on the canal, WAS took on Southstoke in a thrilling 20/20 cricket match.
Every year the report seems to throw up different players names who have achieved a high level of cricketing excellence, this year we can add messrs Markall, Couchman and Stoneley to the list.
On winning the toss, WAS decided to bat. The highlights of the innings were a second wicket partnership of 51 between Alex Nash & Tim Markall, who went on to make 26 not out and 47 not out respectively (it is thought the the later score is a record for the team in this form of cricket!). The team score was also assisted by Duncan Nash (20) and Josh Nicholson (14 not out) who added some firepower at the end of innings. After their 20 overs, WAS had reached a very respectable 129 for 7. Pick of the Southstoke bowling was Trev Wild who took 5-13.
When Southstoke went into bat, they were straight away pinned down by the WAS opening bowlers, Simon Butcher (0-13) and Josh Nicholson (1-7), but with wickets in hand and the regular bowlers exhausted, it was left to Martyn Evans (1-12), Alex Kiely (1-15), James Couchman (1-6) and Peter Stoneley (0-17) to stop the flow of runs. They certainly achieved this and restricted Southstoke to 82-6 from their 20 overs.
The performances from James and Peter were even more impressive when it is remembered that the last time James played for WAS, he ended up in A&E after hooking a cricket ball into his face! and for Peter who had not bowled a cricket ball for over 20 years!
Man of the match goes to Tim Markall for his 47 which was an excellent innings of clean and decisive hitting.
